Nourishing the Mind and the Spirit

Education is an essential ingredient to improving the quality of life in third world countries.  Of the 8 million people living in the Dominican Republic (DR), 1.5 million have had less than 3 years of schooling.  Education is compulsory through the sixth grade.   However 13% of all eligible children in this age group are not enrolled in school.  In addition, 59% of those finishing 8th grade do not continue their education.  Not included in these statistics are the children of migrant Haitians who illegally enter the country to work in sugar cane fields.

For over 100 years the Episcopal Church in the DR has nourished the mind and spirit of young people.  During the last 10 years, the Diocese has expanded its ministry of education with the opening of 10 new schools, bringing the number of schools to 18.

Episcopal schools must be self-supporting, because the diocese does not have the resources to subsidize them.  Therefore, schools depend upon tuition fees to cover their costs.  Even so, the diocese is committed to providing an education to young people, regardless of their ability to pay or religious affiliation.  A "SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM" program supported by individuals and churches in the United States allows the diocese to do so.

In 2004 over 4,500 students where educated in Episcopal Schools.  Students.  Students in public and private schools in  the Dominican Republic wear uniforms which does away with class distinctions.  Many schools have morning and afternoon sessions involving different students and grade levels. Many of our Episcopal Schools also offer adult education classes.
